Biography

Charles William Bawden (SN 5343) enlisted on March 31st 1916 as a 22 year old. He was a railway shunter from Spencer Street, Ballarat East. He trained at Ballarat before sailing from Australia on April 4th 1916 on the Euripides, to England and then to France where, in September 1916, he was attached to the 6th Battalion. Three months later he was evacuated to England suffering from Trench Fever. After recovering he was transferred to the Anzac Light Railway Operating Company. On April 22nd 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering gunshot wounds to both legs. He was evacuated to England with a fractured femur before being returned to Australia on the Takada, disembarking at Melbourne on February 11th 1919. He died in May 1956 at the age of 61.
