Biography

Joseph Singleton was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted with the 57th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 17 February 1916 at the age of 40. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 4 April 1916. On 1 September 1916 he transferred to the 59th Battalion from the 57th Battalion and proceeded overseas. On 23 April 1917 he was seriously wounded with a gunshot wound to the skull, brain and right arm, and was invalided to the Royal Victorian Hospital. On 18 October 1917 he embarked for Australia and received a medical discharge on 14 March 1918.
