George Thornton Hearn (SN 907) was born in Ballarat and was a single, 18 year old, engineer at the time of his enlistment on February 18th 1916. Appointed to the 39th Battalion, his unit embarked from Melbourne on board the Ascanius in May. He was posted to France in November 1916 where he was appointed Driver. His service seems to have been relatively uneventful and he remained overseas in several different posts after the war ended, including the Australian Burials Detachment and the Graves Registration Detachment. There is no record of his return to Australia although his next of kin were advised that he was returning in December 1919. He was discharged on February 26th 1920.
