Thomas Douglas White (SN 622) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on February 18th 1916. Posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 27th, first to England, then to France in November. During his service he was wounded in action on three occasions and was also awarded a Military Medal. ‘On 7th/8th and 9th June, 1917, during the operations south of MESSINES for his gallant conduct and devotion to duty whilst taking part in the assault on the enemy's position. He rendered great assistance to his Officer, and was of exceptional value when his unit was on one occasion held up by machine gun fire. He set a splendid example to his comrades.' Back in England after the signing of the Armistice he was found guilty of being absent without leave for seven days. He returned to Australia aboard the Soudan, disembarked at Melbourne on June 29th 1919 and was discharged on August 13th. He volunteered and served again in WW2.
