Arthur Melville Lilburne MC (Lt.) was born in Ballarat and was educated at Ballarat’s Grenville College and School of Mines, and later at Melbourne University. He enlisted in Melbourne on February 18th 1916 at which time he was 27 years old, single and a lecturer at Melbourne University. He embarked for active service in October on board the Aeneas as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. He served with distinction and was awarded a Military Cross 'for gallantry and devotion to duty at Verbrandenmolen Ridge, south of Ypres, on 11th March 1918’. A few months later he fell ill and was evacuated to hospital in England, but died of cerebro-spinal meningitis on July 11th 1918. He is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, UK.
