Born in Donegal, Ireland, James Francis Lynch was a married 43 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 17th of February 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire on the 3rd of July 1916.
James was wounded in action on the 20th of September 1917; he was invalided to England on the 25th of September with gunshot wounds to both of his legs.
He returned to Australia on the 21st of March 1918, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 27th of April 1918 due to his wounds.
