John Nolan was born in Stawell, VIC and was a Bricklayer living in Ballarat East when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 21 February 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He moved to France in November and served through the war without significant incident being recorded on his service record, although at one stage he was charged with æbeing in possession of Government property, and bribery' for which he forfeited seven day's pay. He returned home after the war, disembarking at Melbourne on July 18th 1919.
