Biography

Albert John Boyce (SN 1664) was born at Dean’s Marsh but was resident in Eureka Street, Ballarat, when he enlisted on February 21st 1916 and commenced training with the 14th Depot Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on April 4th 1916 aboard the ‘Euripides’, and on arrival in Egypt was posted to the 59th Battalion. He arrived in France in June 1916 and the following month was listed as missing in action in the tragic charge at Fromelles, a Court of Enquiry later finding he had been killed in action on July 19th 1916. He was just 19 years of age, has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Memorial Wall at VC Corner Cemetery near Fromelles.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as John A. Boyce.
