Born in Ballarat, Charles Robert Kift was a single 27 year old carpenter at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, Victoria on the 25th of February 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A31 Ajana on the 8th of July 1916.
On the 26th of September 1917, Charles was wounded in action. He was invalided to England on the 28th of September and admitted on the same date with a severe gunshot wound to his right arm.
He returned to Australia on the 28th of June 1919, and was discharged on the 14th of August 1919 due to the termination of his enlistment period.
