Biography

Gordon Charles Thistlethwaite was born inn Koroit, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the 29th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement on 14 February 1916 claiming the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A35 Berrima on 4 July 1916. However, according to his record it was revealed that he was underage at the time of enlistment after travelling overseas to France on 12 November 1916. He was returned to Base Deport at Havre where he attended the Australian Corpse School from the 29th Battalion and from there assigned to the Australian Corps Working Party. By December 1918 he was marched out to England for return to Australia due to his age. He received his final discharge on 27 March 1919.
