Biography

Robert Dixon was born in Hughhalm, England and was living in Ballarat as a Labourer when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 28 February 1916 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. as a reinforcement for the 39th Battalion but a Medical Board assessed him and recommended him as suitable only for Home Service, in the United Kingdom. A further assessment determined he should return to Australia and he left England on the Euripides and reached Melbourne in September 1917. A month later he was discharged as æmedically unfit – disability – overage'.

Despite this assessment he lived on for almost 50 years and died in July 1966 at the age of 94.
