Robert Dixon (SN 429) born in Hughhalm, England was a married 44 year old labourer living in Ballarat when he enlisted on February 28th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion his unit embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius on May 27th 1916. He was assessed by a Medical Board and recommended him as suitable only for Home Service in the United Kingdom. A further assessment determined he should return to Australia and he left England on the Euripides and reached Melbourne in September 1917. A month later on October 25th he was discharged as ‘medically unfit – disability – overage'. Despite this assessment he lived on for almost 50 years and died in July 1966 at the age of 94.
