Biography

Charles Johnstone Reid was born in Murchison, VIC and was an Assayer living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, C Company on 1 May 1916 at the age of 34. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916 and reached England in mid-July. He obviously had difficulty with further training and in mid-October a Medical Board found him fit only for Home Service and he was struck off the strength of the 39th Battalion. His location and role through 1917 is not recorded in his service record. He returned to Australia on the Osterley and disembarked at Melbourne on April 13th 1918. He was discharged in May as æmedically unfit – osteoarthritis'.
