Biography

Norman Lefroy George was born in Lefroy, TAS and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 39th Battalion, Headquarters on 1 March 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. . In September 1916 he was transferred to the 8th Battalion in France. On May 8th 1917 during the fighting at Bullecourt he was wounded in action. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and was evacuated to the Guildford War Hospital in England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned home on the Anchises and was discharged as æmedically unfit – GSW shoulder' on July 4th 1918.
