Biography

Dave Powell (SN 978) was born in Sebastopol and attended the Sebastopol State School. The young butcher gave his age as 19 when he enlisted on March 2nd 1916. He embarked on the Ascanius in May with the 39th Battalion and transferred to the 8th Battalion after being posted to France in September that year. In September 1917, at Broodseinde, Belgium, he suffered a gunshot wound to his back resulting in a fractured spine. He died of his wounds on 3rd October 1917 and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France. It was then revealed he was just 17 years of age.
