David Powell was born in Sebastapol and enlisted on 2nd March 1916 from Ballarat South where he worked as a butcher. He was 19 years old and single. He was sent to the 39th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 978. Later he was transferred to the 8th Infantry Battalion. On 3rd October 1917 he died of wounds sustained at Broodseinde and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
