Meade Edward Jones (SN 1679) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 20th 1916. On November 10th he embarked aboard the Port Lincoln for service with the 58th Infantry Battalion, reaching France in September. In March 1917 he was transferred to the 65th Battalion. From that point he had some minor illness and discipline issues until bronchitis caused his return to Australia on the Port Darwin. He disembarked at Melbourne on March 4th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on April 8th. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward M. Jones.
