Biography

Samuel Isaac Phillips (SN 4959) was born in Ballarat and educated at Ballarat College, but enlisted at Broadmeadows on March 3rd 1916. A draper, 28 years of age, and married to Celia, he joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and departed from Melbourne just two weeks later on board the Wiltshire. On June 2nd 1916 he died of nephritis, a disease of the kidneys, in the 3rd Australian General Hospital in Abassia, Cairo. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
