Samuel Isaac Phillips was born in Ballarat, but enlisted from Drouin on 3rd March 1916. He was a draper, 28 years of age, and married. He joined the 39th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 4959. On 2nd September 1916 he died of nephritis - a disease of the kidneys, in the 3rd Australian General Hospital in Abassia, a suburb of Cairo. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
