Lewis Herman Leidle was born in Minyip, VIC and was living in Ballarat as a Casual Linesman by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 4 March 1916 at the age of 32. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Orontes on 16 August 1916. He was admitted to hospital briefly for illness in France on 27 December 1916 and was later discharged on 16 Jan 1917. In July of that year he was wounded in action (gassed) and returned to hospital. He was granted early return and returned to Australia 31 January 1918.
