Leslie Herbert Baird (SN 6219) born at Ballarat, was a 26 year old farmer when he enlisted in Horsham on March 25th 1916. On September 11th he embarked aboard the Euripides and in December he joined the 8th Infantry Battalion in France. In April 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was evacuated to hospital in England where he was assessed as unfit for further active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Benalla and was discharged ‘medically unfit, abdominal wound’ on November 30th.
