George Richard Daggett was born in Ballarat and a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Depot Battalion on 29 February 1916 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 4 April 1916. In November he reached France as a reinforcement for the 59th Battalion that had suffered heavy losses at Fromelles. He had the good fortune to come through the war unscathed, at least physically. He returned to Melbourne on August 5th 1919, disembarking from the Port Lyttleton.
