Charles Percival Beckwith was born in Ballarat and was a Picture Framer by trade when he enlisted in the 60th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 6 March 1916 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916. Shortly after his arrival he became ill and was hospitalised with influenza. His poor health continued and he was invalided first to hospital in England and then to Australia. On October 28th 1917 he was discharged as medically unfit, suffering ├ŽDebility D.A.H.' (disordered action of the heart).
