Biography

Harold James Ware was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a clerk when he enlisted with the 39th Battalion, D Company on 6 March 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. Given his precious military experience with the 71st Infantry he was enlisted with the rank of Corporal. He proceeded overseas to France from Southampton on 23 November 1916 with the rank of Lance Sergeant and on 5 March 1917 received a commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. On 11 June 1917 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to the right knee and was immediately evacuated to the 4th Stationary General Hospital. Later reports would show he also suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm and foot. He returned to Australia 30 April 1919.
