George McLarty (SN 5386) was born in Ballarat, and educated at the Macarthur Street State School. He enlisted in Perth, WA, on March 14th 1916. He was 33 years old, married and employed as a cooper. He was posted to 1st Tunnelling Company, Australia Mining Corps, and embarked in late September on board the Suffolk. Towards the war’s end he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital in England. He died from gas poisoning and pneumonia on November 4th 1918, and is buried in the Overleigh Cemetery, Chester, UK.
