Alfred Ernest Atkinson (SN 270) born at Egerton, was a 26 year old farmer when he enlisted at Ballarat on August 19th1914. With the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed to Egypt. He took part in the April 25th 1915 Gallipoli landing but then on August 7th at Lone Pine he received wounds to his face and hand that forced his evacuation to hospital. He was then returned to Australia aboard the Aeneas, and was discharged medically unfit on May 5th 1916.
