Robert Edward Beames was born in Port Fairy, VIC and was living in Ballarat working as an Engine Driver when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, A Company on 6 March 1916 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. By late November he was serving in France with the 39th Battalion. Toward the war's end he was withdrawn from his unit suffering illness, specified as æpremature senility and debility'. He was already en route to Australia when the Armistice was signed.
