Born in Ararat, Victoria, John McLeod was a married 37 year old engine expert at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 7th of March 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on the 4th of April 1916.
John returned to Australia on the 15th of December 1917, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 21st of January 1918 due to rheumatism.
