John McLeod (SN 1744a) born in Ararat, was a married 37 year old oil engine expert when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 7th1916. He embarked aboard the Euripides on April 4th and sailed to England. Initially assigned to the 57th Infantry Battalion, he was transferred to the 59th Battalion and moved to France in November. His service at the Western Front was severely restricted due to illness and debility and he returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton. He disembarked at Melbourne on December 15th1917 and was discharged on January 21st 1918 ‘medically unfit, rheumatism’.
