Edward McDonald Watters (SN 2171) born in Casterton, was a 28 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 10th 1916. He embarked aboard the Shropshire on September 25th and in December he joined the 39th Infantry Battalion in France. He was wounded twice during 1917 suffering gunshot wounds to his shoulder in May and to his right hand in October. While recovering in England in early 1918 he was charged with being absent without leave for three weeks. He returned to Australia aboard the Orca, disembarked at Melbourne on April 7th 1919 and was discharged on May 15th.
