Ernest Bell Warren was born in Mitiamo, Victoria, was single and a labourer when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 39th Battalion, 1st Reinforcement on 9 March 1916 at the age of 39. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He reported sick to hospital on 12 December 1916, suffering from weakness, and it was decided that he be returned to Australia as medically unfit on 27 August 1917, suffering from bilateral muscular weakness.
