Biography

Leonard Gordon Clark Kyle (SN 1202) was born in Geelong and educated at Flinders State School but he enlisted in Ballarat on March 13th 1916. The 25 year old, single, bank accountant was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion and departed for active service from Melbourne in late May on board the Ascanius. He was promoted to Corporal during training in England before being posted to France in November. He was wounded in action in January 1917 and evacuated to England for treatment. He was promoted to Sergeant before returning to France in September. He died in the fighting near Passchendaele on October 12th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
