Biography

Harold Crouch (SN 1985) was born at Murtoa and was a 23 year old engine fitter when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 11th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion he sailed from Melbourne aboard the Orontes on August 16th and reached England in early October. Soon after disembarking he was admitted to hospital suffering from myalgia and goitre. He was destined not to join his unit on the battlefield as he was assessed as unfit for active service and was returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses departing England on February 13th 1917, reaching Melbourne on April 12th and being discharged ‘medically unfit’ on May 23rd 1917.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harold Crough.
