Frederick Samuel Martin was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 13 March 1916 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916 and on November 23rd he joined the 39th Battalion in France. In April 1917 he transferred to the 10th Australian Infantry Brigade Headquarters where he served until illness forced him back to England in mid-1918.
