Biography

George Herbert Bicknell was born in Ballarat and was unemployed when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 13 March 1916 at the age of 34. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. By the end of November he was in France with his battalion. In March 1917 he was withdrawn from the line for three weeks while he recovered from a bout of mumps, but aside from this he served through the war without significant injury or illness. By war's end he had attained the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Australia on the Windhuk, disembarking at Melbourne on August 18th 1919.
