Biography

George Herbert Bicknell (SN 407) enlisted in March 1916 as a 34 year old from Anderson Street in Ballarat. He trained in Ballarat with the 39th Battalion then embarked on the Ascanius on May 27th. By the end of November he was serving in France with his battalion. In March 1917 he was withdrawn from the line for three weeks while he recovered from a bout of mumps but, aside from this, he served through the war without significant injury or illness. By war’s end he had attained the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Australia on the Windhuk, disembarking at Melbourne on August 18th 1919. He died in September 1956 aged 75.
