Biography

Henry Miller (SN 1862) was born in Adelaide and was a 43 year old labourer, married to Helen, when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 20th 1916. In mid-August he embarked aboard the Orontes and sailed to England. In November 1916 he crossed to France attached to the 39th Infantry Battalion. In January 1917 he was hospitalised for three weeks suffering from mumps. In early 1918 he had two weeks leave in England before being diagnosed with arthritis that was to curtail his service. Just before the fighting ceased, he left England aboard the Gaika, reached Melbourne on December 29th 1918 and was discharged as ‘medically unfit, chronic arthritis’ on January 12th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Henry Millar.
