Born in Clunes, Victoria, William Edward Jones was a single 30 year old farmer at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, Victoria on the 15th of March 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on the 28th of July 1916.
On the 5th of October 1917, William was wounded in action; he was invalided to England on the 10th of October and admitted to Lewisham Military Hospital on the 11th of October 1917.
On the 17th of December 1917, he was admitted sick with a fractured clavicle. William returned to Australia on the 1st of February 1919 and was discharged ad medically unfit on the 11th of March 1919.
