Donald Johnston (SN 3246), a motor engineer, was born at Linton and declared himself to be 44 years of age when he enlisted on March 1st 1916. On July 4th he embarked aboard the Berrima and sailed to England. Attached to the 29th Infantry Battalion, he crossed to France in November. His time in France was interrupted by hospitalisations due to lumbago and rheumatism until he was withdrawn to England. On May 4th 1917 he left England aboard the Miltiades for home service, ‘overage and lumbago’. He was discharged on August 6th 1917.
