Biography

Allan Russell Rutherford was born in Allendale, VIC and was a Labourer living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, A Company on 18 March 1916 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. By mid-November he was in France but within a month he was hospitalised with mumps. In June 1917 he was wounded in action, gassed, and was away from his unit for two months while he recovered. In May 1919, six months after the Armistice, he sailed from England on the Rio Pardo and disembarked at Adelaide in July, ahead of his discharge in September.
