Biography

Thomas Louis Gitsham (SN 936/Lt.) born in Ballarat, first enlisted in Sydney on August 11th 1914 as a 27 year old sales manager. With the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, he embarked for New Guinea aboard the Berrima little more than a week later. He was discharged on his return from New Guinea in March 1915 but immediately re-enlisted for service with the 55th Infantry Battalion. In 1916 he resigned from the AIF was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force with whom he served until the war ended. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number 250324.

His brothers James and Charles were killed in action and are both honoured with trees in the Avenue.
