Biography

Laurie James Cadzow (SN 2053 / 2053A) born at St. Arnaud, was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on May 29th 1915. He embarked aboard the Shropshire on September 25th and sailed to England before crossing to France in December to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. In January 1917 he suffered a mild head wound but in June he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his right leg that necessitated its amputation. He was therefore returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses and discharged ‘medically unfit, amputation’ on January 25th 1918. He had previously enlisted in July 1915 but was discharged after three months due to a heart disorder.
