Biography

Stanley Robert Close (Lt) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Mt. Pleasant State School. He was teaching at the Brown Hill State School prior to his enlistment on August 28th 1914. He left Melbourne with the 8th Battalion on board the Benalla in October. The 20 year old was being evacuated by transport vessel to Mudros, after being seriously wounded during the Gallipoli landing, when he died of his wounds on April 28th 1915. He was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Lone Pine.

His brothers Hector and Leslie also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
