Biography

Stanley Joseph Callow Champion (SN 2161) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Mt. Pleasant State School. He was a 24 year old orchardist in Perth when he enlisted on May 3rd 1915. He embarked from Fremantle aboard the Wandilla on June 25th, and on August 6th he came ashore at Gallipoli to serve with the 12th Battalion. He spent just three days at Gallipoli before illness forced his evacuation to Mudros then on to England. He returned to the battlefield when he rejoined his unit in France in April 1916. On July 25th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the honour board of the Mt. Pleasant State school. He was 26 years of age.
