Arnold Leslie Lusher (SN 1338), born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old groom when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 21st 1916. He departed Australia aboard the Ascanius and in November he reached France to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. Through much of 1917 and 1918 he was troubled by laryngitis, gastritis and scabies but on September 29th 1918 he was wounded in action suffering a gunshot wound to the neck. Fortunately, the wound was not severe, and he was able to rejoin his unit a month later. After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Rio Pardo, disembarked at Adelaide on July 17th 1919 and was discharged on September 4th.
His brother Henry also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
