Rae Gillibe Bennett's records do not note where he was born, but he was a Bank Official Living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, H Company on 28 August 1914 at the age of 25. Due to previous military service he enlisted in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. On 2 May 1915 he was wounded in action at Gallipoli with a gunshot wound to the knee and was hospitalized until 22 July, when he re-joined his unit. However, he found himself in hospital again ager being wounded a second time just a week later. He returned to Australia 31 January 1918

His father, Lt-Colonel Alfred Winton Bennett (Tree No 3263) also served.
