Rae Gillibe Bennett's was a bank official living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, H Company on August 28th 1914 at the age of 25. Due to previous military service he enlisted at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on October 19 1914. In May 1915 he was wounded in action at Gallipoli with a gunshot wound to the knee and was hospitalised until late July, when he re-joined his unit. However, he found himself in hospital again after being wounded a second time just a week later. He returned to Australia at the end of January 1918.
