Biography

William John Croton (SN 6649) born at Kerang, was a 22 year old married labourer when he enlisted on March 27th 1916. He embarked aboard the Nestor on October 2nd and sailed to England . He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion in France in February 1917. In mid-1917 he spent two months in hospital due to illness, then in July 1918 he suffered a shell wound to his right thigh. At war’s end he returned to Australia on the Port Darwin, disembarked at Melbourne on July 27th and was discharged on September 29th. It appears that he had also enlisted (SN 1111) in October 1914 but had deserted in May 1915. He also served in WW2.
