A clerk by trade, John Thomas Merlin was a single 18 year old at the time of his enlistment in his birth town of Ballarat on the 24th of March 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 2nd of October 1916.
On the 16th of February 1919, John was appointed Lance Corporal.
He returned to Australia on the 20th of October 1919, and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 4th of December 1919.
