Biography

John Thomas Merlin (SN 6542) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 10th 1916. Assigned to the 7th Infantry Battalion he embarked on October 2nd aboard the Nestor and reached England in mid-November. He crossed to France in the depth of winter, just prior to Christmas, but aside for some brushes with illness he came through the war without suffering major harm. He returned to Australia aboard the Euripides, disembarked at Melbourne on October 20th 1919 and was discharged on December 4th.
