Biography

William Robert Sandford was born in Stockport, England, was married to Mrs Emily A Sandford of Yarrawee near Buninyong, Ballarat, Victoria and was a Tailor when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 24 March 1916 at the age of 42. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. Unfortunately it appears William Robert Sandford's records became confused with another soldier of an identical name (William R Sandford, SERN 330) and have yet to be clarified.

William Robert Sandford received a promotion to Corporal and returned to Australia on 31 March 1919.
