Biography

David Arthur Higgins was born in Ballarat and was a Butcher by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 27 March 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He sailed first to England, where on October 11th he was transferred to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade as a driver. On December 30th he crossed over to France where he served through 1917 and 1918 without illness or injury being recorded on his service record. After the war he returned to Australia on the Karmala, coming ashore at Melbourne on August 17th 1919. After his discharge he made his home in Barkly Street Ballarat.
