Biography

David Alexander Spiers was born in Ascot, VIC and was a Miner by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 8th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement on 25 March 1916 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 11 September 1916. By January 1917, the northern winter was aggravating his asthma resulting in his admission to hospital. The asthma persisted and he was returned to Australia on the Beltana, disembarking at Melbourne on May 12th 1917. He was discharged on June 7th as æmedically unfit – asthma'.
