Biography

Sydney Victor Burrow (SN 4/ Lt.) was Melbourne born and was a 28 year old military drill instructor when he enlisted in the AIF on September 1st 1914. Assigned the rank of sergeant major he embarked aboard the Hororata on October 19th . He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant before reaching France in March 1916 to serve with the 7th Infantry Battalion. In June he was promoted to lieutenant, then a month later at Pozieres he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital in England. In October he was transferred to the Anzac Provost Corps in England but then rejoined his unit in France in July 1917. A month later he was withdrawn to the 2nd Australian Training Battalion in England before he was returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles disembarking in Sydney on December 31st 1917. His appointment was terminated on January 18th 1918.
