Thomas Theodore Taylor was born in Melbourne, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted with the 39th Battalion, B Company on 28 March 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He proceeded overseas to France aboard the Southampton on 23 November 1916 and reported sick to hospital in France at Boulogne on 17 January 1917. The illness turned out to be appendicitis and he was transferred to England before returning to Australia for home service on 22 July 1917. He received a medical discharge from service on 29 November 1917.
