Biography

George Edward Sanders Ford was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 28 March 1916 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916. In February 1917 he arrived in France as a reinforcement for the 39th Battalion. On July 24th he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital. He rejoined his unit four months later but his health had suffered and he was withdrawn to England before being returned to Australia on the A74 Marathon. He was discharged in May 1918 æmedically unfit – overage, gassed'.
