William Christopher Tennant was born in Daylesford, VIC and was a Butcher living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 30 March 1916 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. In November he joined the 39th Battalion in France. He spent considerable time away from his unit during the first half of 1917 due to unspecified sickness but otherwise came through the war without significant physical harm. He returned home on the Karagola, reaching Melbourne on June 12th 1919.
